The political media this week is all a'twitter over Mitt Romney's planned speech on religion and politics. I think it's the sign of a campaign in trouble, and frankly, the speech will be a non-event based on the descriptions that I've seen of what will be covered. He is not planning to address any specifics of the Mormon faith (which is where many of the questions about his faith come from) and that means that when he's done with the platitudes about faith in America, Republicans (and the press) will be left with more questions than answers. His campaign will then spend the next several days fighting off questions about some of the weirder Mormon beliefs that were avoided in the speech. It can only hurt his campaign and further boost Mike Huckabee.
You can read his reasons for giving the speech here. If he really wants to win in Iowa, this speech is not the way to do it and will prove to be the worst mistake of the campaign.
UPDATE: Will Romney's speech turn into Barney the Dinosaur?
