Thunderstorms, Hail and Tornadoes...Oh My!

What a day. If you had asked me at 11am this morning when I left Rohnert Park if thunderstorms, hail and tornadoes would be a problem on our drive home I would have laughed in your face. Wind I expected, and we had a pretty steady 30 knot tailwind all the way from the Altamont Pass to the Grapevine. I've never gotten such good mileage.

Coming down off the big hill into Castaic I turned on the L.A. newsradio station and was shocked at what I heard. It was as if we had been transported to Kansas. Severe weather was breaking out all over Southern California, tornadoes had just set down in Riverside County derailing a train and throwing cars and trucks around, hail had collapsed the roofs on two homes in Placentia, water was feet deep in some areas of Irwindale and El Monte, and heavy rain and mudslides had hit the fire-scarred canyons of Orange County. It sounded like the end of the world.

Traffic continued relatively smoothly all the way down to Burbank where it came to a complete stop. It had taken us 6 hours to go the 412 miles from Rohnert Park to Burbank, and it took another 3 hours to go the 57 miles the rest of the way home. We ran through some of the remnants of the storms that had messed up the Southland, but nothing too bad.

However, I'm whipped and I done for tonight. Back at it tomorrow.
