My Choice for McCain's VP

UPDATE: Boy, I missed the GOP pick. McCain picks Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska. Brilliant choice.

Since I know the McCain campaign reads this blog, let me offer my suggestion for McCain's choice of running mate: Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating. His name has come up only in passing, and for all I know was never seriously considered, but I think he'd be just the guy to match up against Joe Biden and a guy conservatives could rally behind.

Keating is a pro-life Catholic (something which seems to be increasingly rare in politics these days), and has a strong law-and-order background. His resume looks like this:
  • 1973-1975 Oklahoma State Representative
  • 1975-1981 Oklahoma State Senator
  • 1981-1985 United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma
  • 1985-1988 Assistant Secretary of the Treasury
  • 1988-1990 United States Associate Attorney General
  • 1990-1993 United States Deputy Secretary ofHousing and Urban Development
  • 1995-2003 Governor of Oklahoma
  • 2003-Present President of American Council of Life Insurers

Keating faced a very difficult situation only 3 months into his first term of governor when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed, taking the lives of 168 people. He's seen terrorism up close, and he handled that situation with grace and skill.

He's 64 years old, which may be a little older than some might like, but his resume and personal skills would overcome any objections about age. He would be the only one on either ticket with any actual executive leadership experience, both in government and the private sector.

For what it's worth, he's a guy who could make me vote for McCain.
