SYLMAR -- A massive brush fire, driven by near hurricane force winds, has burned dozens of homes and forced the evacuation of ten thousand people in the northwest San Fernando Valley. One person, a 40 year old man suffered serious burns in the fire and three firefighters have suffered minor injuries battling the flames.
The blaze was first reported at 10:29 p.m. at 1300 Sayre Street above Veterans Memorial Park. Within an hour, flames had consumed a 100-acre swath of the San Gabriel Mountains, raging alongside dense foothill neighborhoods north of the 210 Freeway.
The Department of Water and Power has begun de-energizing some power lines
due to the Sylmar Fire, and officials say planned, rotating outages may be necessary.
Fire officials say 2,600 acres have burned so far, with more than 1,000 structures threatened by uncontrolled flames. Firefighters abandoned a mobile home park around 6 a.m. north of the Golden State Freeway and west Yarnell Street, where about 30 trailers were ablaze.
The TV shots I'm watching now show flames moving through dense housing areas with a lot of structures on fire. Santa Ana winds are hitting the area today along with 90+ degree temperatures. The worst possible combination.
