Made It

The original plan was to get up at 5 and hit the road by 5:30, after checking the radar to see which route would be best. I woke up at 3:30 and knew I'd never get back to sleep, so we ended up hitting the road at 4:25. 8 1/2 hours and 535 miles later we were home. We took the coast after looking at the radar and seeing big trouble over the Grapevine. I'm not sure they ever shut it down, but they were reporting heavy snow which undoubtedly slowed everything down.

We actually made great time considering the weather. I had rented a car for the week since I have two round trips to make to Sonoma State, and the car had XM radio, including a channel dedicated just to traffic and weather in Los Angeles. Periodically as the day wore on I'd check to see how traffic was doing and things were definitely ugly in Los Angeles. One freeway was completely shut down due to a fatal accident involving a CHP officer, and others were flooding or jammed with accidents. Somehow we made it through L.A. with almost no delays. That's hard to do on a good weather day.

Unfortunately, the parade of storms continues and I may have to turn around and head north again tomorrow. Another storm due in on Wednesday could mess me up, either outbound or when I try to get back home with the daughter. Either way, there are a couple more long days ahead.
