President-elect Barack Obama's transition team said an internal review shows his staff did not take part in "inappropriate discussions" with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich over filling his vacated Senate seat -- affirming Obama's previous claim that his office was not involved in any wrongdoing.
Obama said he was directing his staff to conduct the review at a press conference last week.
"That review affirmed the public statements of the president-elect that he had no contact with the governor or his staff, and that the president-elect's staff was not involved in inappropriate discussions with the governor or his staff over the selection of his successor as U.S. senator," Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said in a written statement Monday.
I'm not suggesting that the Obama folks did anything wrong. I just can't imagine a similar situation involving a Republican in which the Republican would be allowed to investigate his own organization and declare himself above reproach without the press going absolutely nuts.
