To Say "Jesus" or Not to Say "Jesus", That is the Question

UPDATE: He did, and closed it with the Lord's prayer. Nice touch.

There is a great debate raging over whether Pastor Rick Warren will invoke the name of Jesus during his inaugural invocation later this morning. Ann Althouse thinks not, but those who know Rick say he will:
LAKE FOREST – A Saddleback small group plans to kick off their pastor's role in history with a pancake breakfast on inauguration day.

The group will be among more than a dozen others countywide celebrating the historic inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.

As they watch they expect to hear him invoke the name of Jesus during the invocation something Saddleback mega Church Pastor Rick Warren told his congregation during a recent Sunday service.

Warren's prayer and whether or not he would invoke the name of Jesus has been speculated in the media with some fellow preachers urging him to use the name while others favored a strict church/state separation have urged him to offer a more non-sectarian prayer such as the ones offered in previous invocations.

In previous discussion Warren did not confirm or deny his plans. Instead he told Associated Press, "I'm a Christian pastor so I will pray the only kind of prayer I know how to pray."

Put me down in the "he will" category. I can't imagine him praying any other way. Those folks who find that offensive will just have to....find that offensive.
