February 22, 1980 was a Friday and that evening I was driving from my home in San Diego spend the weekend at my parent's house in Huntington Beach. As I was driving I was listening to updates of the U.S. Hockey Team game against the Soviets. That was the now famous "Miracle on Ice" game featuring Al Michael's legendary call.
Two days later the team beat Finland to win the gold medal and for the first time in several years there was a spirit of optimism in the United States. Remember, at the same time this was going on we had record high interest rates, hostages in Iran, and Russians in Afghanistan. Later that year Jimmy Carter would foolishly boycott the Summer Games in Moscow, shortly before he was crushed in the November election by Ronald Reagan.
That February night sparked something in the country that it really needed. We could use another miracle of some sort right about now.
