Senate Democrats were now mulling the compromise, which would cap the package at $780 billion. The package had grown to $937 billion after senators added to it, and Obama has said he'd accept a deal around $800 billion."Flushed out" is a pretty apt description for this bill. There are at least two Republicans on board, but the Dems need at least three since Ted Kennedy is unlikely to vote:
"There's a proposal that is sufficiently flushed out that we can have a caucus and discuss it," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D. "This is a proposal that involves many of the interested parties."
Reid suggested to reporters that he had two GOP backers for the bill but needed at least one more because neither wants to be the crucial 60th vote if all 58 members of the Democratic caucus support Obama.
So, what spineless Republican will be the one to give Harry Reid his victory? I'm pretty sure he's already got Arlen Specter and Susan Collins. What do you bet the third vote will be from Mel Martinez of Florida who is not running for re-election?
I'm still hoping this thing can be stalled through the weekend. With every day that goes by support for the bill drops.
