Harry Kalas, the Phillies' Hall of Fame announcer, died at 1:20 p.m. today, the Phillies announced. Mr. Kalas collapsed in the press box at Nationals Stadium in Washington at about 12:30 p.m. and was rushed to George Washington University Medial Center. The cause of the death was not announced.
Kalas was also the unforgettable voice of NFL Films.
The Phillies were in Washington D.C. to play the Nationals for the Nats home opener. They were also scheduled to visit the White House tomorrow to celebrate their World Series win. That visit has been cancelled.
Reading through the comments on the Philly.com piece it's clear that Kalas was a huge part of the fan's experience in watching or listening to the Phillie's games (he'd been broadcasting for them since 1971). They're reacting much as the way I'd expect Dodger fans to react if Vin Scully were to leave us.
