A father from Scotland has given his daughter the ultimate wedding gift – by donating one of his kidneys.
Ian Greig feared his daughter, Heather, would never be able to walk down the aisle. But all that changed when the 62-year-old decided to give his daughter the gift of life, Scotland’s Daily Record reported.
Heather, 36, was close to death when her kidneys failed two years ago and was put on dialysis. Her brother, Ian, and partner, Jamie, were tested to see if they were a match – but both of them were ruled out.
That’s when her dad stepped in.
"It broke my heart to see what she was going through,” Greig told the Record. "But waking up, having donated a kidney to my daughter was the most sensational feeling.”
In a speech at the wedding reception, 10 months after the life-saving operation, Heather thanked her father.
"I know how painful it was and how ill my dad was after the operation,” she said. "He thought he would never get to walk me down the aisle but what he did made all that possible."
This will be a very special Father's Day for that dad.
