Obama Ready for Another Copenhagen Moment

Let's see, he went to Copenhagen to secure the Olympics for Chicago. Chicago was voted out in the first round.

He went to Virginia to campaign for Creigh Deeds. Deeds was beaten like a drum.

He went to very blue New Jersey to campaign for Jon Corzine. New Jersey elected the Republican.

Now he's going to Massachusetts to campaign for a very bad Senate candidate whose support is cratering:
His health care bill at stake, President Barack Obama plans a trip to Massachusetts to campaign for endangered Senate Democratic candidate Martha Coakley amid release of a poll showing an edge for the Republican Party in the race to fill a Senate seat Democrats have held for over a half-century.

Democratic officials disclosed the president's plans Friday on condition of anonimity because they were not authorized to pre-empt a White House announcement.

"If Scott Brown wins, it'll kill the health bill," Democrat Barney Frank, D-Mass., said, underscoring the stakes of Tuesday's special election.

Bawney Fwank hasn't been paying attention to the news coming from his own state because officials there, along with Harry Reid, have more or less promised that health care will get a vote long before they ever seat Scott Brown.

All that aside, what possible reasons could Obama have to make this trip?
  1. Ego. He still believes his own press.
  2. He has to go to send a message to other Dems that he won't abandon them in the tough fight.
  3. They have polling that says his appearance can help. (Of course, they though he'd help in Copenhagen, too.)
  4. They have polling that says the loss won't be as bad if he goes, so he can claim credit for keeping it closer.
  5. He has brain dead people running his political office. He certainly doesn't have excess political capital to spend on losing efforts.
There's probably a little bit of all of these things involved. Given the recent numbers from Massachusetts, this is a high-risk move.
