Car Bomb in Times Square

This could have been very ugly:
A suspicious vehicle in the heart of Times Square led the police to clear thousands of tourists and theatergoers from the area on a warm and busy Saturday evening.

Reports said the vehicle contained a package that did not explode, and late Saturday night it was not clear whether the package was a bomb. A federal official said the incident was not considered it a terrorist threat and that the New York Police Department had told the Department of Homeland Security to stand down.

Police officials said they received a report about 6:30 p.m. of smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street just west of Seventh Avenue. The authorities found a smoking package in the vehicle. A bomb squad was sent to the scene.
It gets worse:
WNBC: 3 PROPANE, 2 GASOLINE TANKS, BURNT WIRES AND SOMETHING RESEMBLING AN I.E.D. FOUND INSIDE THE VEHICLE IN TIMES SQUARE.
It appears to be a failed car bomb.

Three years ago I walked down to Times Square on a Saturday night and it was packed full of people. Even though it was 11pm that night I felt perfectly safe.  Lots of cops around and everybody was having a good time.  Had this thing exploded as planned there could have been terrible carnage down there.

The devices documented in the New York Times did not appear to be explosive in nature, but an incendiary risk. Had the propane/gasoline ignited the vehicle would have burned for hours pretty much putting human activity in that section of New York City on hold.
