Whenever they’re pressed about their political influence, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert always fall back on the defense that they’re just comedians and “fake journalists.” I think that weak defense is going to be much harder to fall back on now that the two comedians are leading a “Rally to Restore Sanity” at the Lincoln Memorial three days before the elections. Are the people who were so upset about Glenn Beck's rally at the Lincoln Memorial going to complain about this? This event will basically be a mockery of other rallies.
My guess is they'll get a few thousand Stewart and Colbert groupies, but given that they're targeting moderates, I don't expect to see a very impressive crowd. Moderates are not overly excited about anything and aren't likely to bother to show up in any significant numbers.
As Rush used to say, "somebody show me the book of Great Moderates in American History". People who are lukewarm don't accomplish much.
