Where Were You?

Forty-seven years ago today the nation was rocked by the assassination of the president.  Some of you reading this weren't around that day, but for those of us who were old enough to remember it was a day we'll never forget.

I was in second grade.  The phone rang and the teacher had a shocked look on her face when she reported to us that Kennedy had been shot.  A few minutes later another call confirmed the president was dead.

Arriving at the babysitter's house after school, she had the black-and-white TV tuned to one of the networks and I remember seeing Air Force One's arrival at Andrews Air Force Base.  The body of the president was clumsily lifted off the jet, Mrs. Kennedy, still wearing the blood-stained suit, climbed into the ambulance, and President Johnson made his first remarks to the nation.

That weekend was a blur of news stories, another murder on Sunday morning on live TV, and the Monday funeral.  And to this day people are still arguing about some of the particulars.

Where were you?

I was in college, between classes, and stopped by to see a friend.

A decade ago, I purchased a wool overcoat that was made in London on that day.
(I wasn't born yet.)
