A fake story that circulated shortly after Osama bin Laden was killed went viral online reporting that one of the SEAL members had called his father to tell him he was on that raid.You can read all the details at the link, in addition to all the red flags that should have been caught by those posting the story.
The story was picked up by Notimex, Mexico’s version of a news agency and made it into La Opinion of Los Angeles and El Universal in Mexico City newspapers’ websites without verification of the facts. (Copy editors at these papers need to hang their heads down in shame for this blunder). It even made it to thewonkroom.thinkprogressive.org website (the story written by Andrea Nill is still there with a poor excuse for follow-up).

Lefty Media Punked by Fake Navy SEAL Story
Those people who are pushing for the DREAM Act, the de facto amnesty program for children of illegal aliens, thought they had a real coup when a story surfaced that one of the Navy SEALs involved in the bin Laden attack was the son of illegal immigrants. It was false, but apparently was too good to check because it fit the lefty template:

Oh, mannnnnn. It never fails to amaze me how these folks who are clearly SO much smarter than I (they tell me so; it MUST be true) sucker themownselves into traps that make them look, and prove themselves to be, not so-damn-smart-it-takes-my-breath-away.
