We've Hit the Critical Point in Gas Prices When People Change Their Driving Habits

It's happened before right around $4 a gallon. Americans suddenly stop driving. Oh, they still do the driving they have to do, but they start making changes in discretionary trips:
Majorities of American voters say gasoline prices have caused them to drive less -- and support domestic oil drilling more.

Sixty two percent have cut down on driving, and 61 percent are more inclined to support domestic drilling, according to a Fox News poll released Tuesday.

The high price of gasoline has caused about half of voters (49 percent) to consider changing their summer travel plans.
I've already changed a couple of things I was going to do. I won't be driving out to Perris for Railroad Days at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in a couple of weeks, and event I've attended the last two years, and in June I have concerts on consecutive nights in Hemet and Temecula. Normally I would have driven home between those dates, but I found it will be cheaper to get a hotel in Hemet and save the mileage on the car.

I'm sure Hemet has changed since I last was there in the early '80s--because I've talked with a retired Riverside County Sheriff's Dept. person. She says it's much worse now.

Hemet today is made up either of senior citizens or outlaw gangs. It's quite the Wild West out there. One gang was trying to bomb police stations and sheriff's cars.
