The advertising icons have been used for decades, but one of the ships caught fire in flight and crashed in Germany:
A Goodyear blimp burst into flames and plunged to earth in a weekend crash in Germany.Living in Southern California it's not uncommon to see a Goodyear blimp in the sky overhead. One of the airships is based in Carson, not too far away. I can remember many a summer evening as a kid seeing the blimp and it's lighted advertising signs flying over Orange County.
The pilot was killed but three passengers managed to jump to safety when the airship caught fire as it was coming in to land at the Reichelsheim aerodrome near Friedberg.
When the airship was just six metres from the floor, the pilot told his passengers, all journalists, to jump to the ground while he tried to land safely.
Once the three had leapt clear of the blimp he took it back up before being it became overwhelmed by flames and crashed to the earth, in a chilling echo of the Hindenburg disaster.

I've seen your local blimp over Riverside Raceway. Fuji Film has (or had) one--saw it off the coast of Oregon about 18 years ago.
Have to wonder how it caught fire; they don't use hydrogen these days.
