Since Rick Perry will not be part of tonight's Iowa debate, it's probably going to be meaningless. None of the people debating will beat Perry if he gets in the race.
If you're interested in watching the debate, The Daily Caller offers some things to look for here.
Saturday is the Ames Straw Poll, another archaic Iowa political event which is given far more attention than it deserves. People like Ron Paul tend to win these things because his fanatical followers will flock to events like this in order to make it look like he's a viable candidate. They do the same thing with every online poll.
Perry's decision to make his expected presidential announcement at the Red State Gathering in South Carolina at almost the same moment as the Straw Poll underscores the silliness of the Ames event. The GOP needs to quit paying attention to all these little quirky Iowa events. They're given far too much importance, and Iowa is given far too much power to choose our candidates.
