Sen. Jim Bunning Continues His Stand Against More Debt

Sen. Jim Bunning is the guy everyone loves to hate today because he dared to object to a unanimous consent request that would have added $10 billion to the national debt. NPR has more:
On the floor of the Senate, Republican Jim Bunning of Kentucky just defended the position he's taken that has delayed an extension of jobless benefits for the nation's unemployed and has forced the furlough of about 2,000 federal workers.

Saying that he has blocked votes on the legislation to underscore his opposition to the ongoing growth in federal debt, Bunning read a letter from "Robert in Louisville," who told the senator that even though he hasn't been working regularly in the past two years he supports what Bunning is doing.

"This country is sooner or later going to implode because of the massive amount of debt run up over the past 40 or 50 years," Robert wrote, according to Bunning.

"Why now?" Bunning said he's been asked, regarding his objection to the legislation. "Why not now?"

And, he added, if the Democratic majority and many Republicans want to force action on the legislation, they should use the Senate rules to override his objection.

The reality is that none of these furloughed workers will lose a dime. They'll all get their back pay. Nobody will be tossed off unemployment. They'll all get their money. The Democrats are sure to use Senate procedures to overrule Bunning and go on with the business of destroying the country.

Bunning is not running for re-election, and he's a guy who used to throw baseballs at batter's heads for a living, so he's not going to be intimidated. He has dared to tell the Democrats that if they're going to pass a bill requiring all legislation to be paid for, they need to apply it to all legislation and not just waive the requirement whenever it's convenient.

Good for Sen. Bunning.

Nobody will be kicked off unemployment because of this? You really think that? Because I just was as well as thousands upon thousands of others. Maybe you should educate yourself before making such claims.

Dear Ignorant in Michigan: In a day or so the Senate will pass the measure and everyone will get their benefits back. It always works that way and probably always will. Pay attention and you'll figure that out. I'll be looking for your apology after that happens.

We may very well get our benefits back. That may very well be true. However, as of now I and many more have been kicked off unemployment. Yet in the meantime how long are my rent and utilities going to go unpaid? I'm sure you have witnessed just how insanely long it takes our Senate to get ANYTHING done, yet you praise a man for making a bad situation worse. You fail to realize that in this unfortunate economic climate getting that check even a few days late can cause horrible problems for so many. Instead of calling people ignorant for trying to enlighten you, maybe you should show a little Christian compassion and pray for them.
