A little after 1 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2009, Karl Frisch emailed a memo to his bosses, Media Matters for America founder David Brock and president Eric Burns. In the first few lines, Frisch explained why Media Matters should launch a “Fox Fund” whose mission would be to attack the Fox News Channel.Read the rest at the link. “Simply put,” Frisch wrote, “the progressive movement is in need of an enemy. George W. Bush is gone. We really don’t have John McCain to kick around any more. Filling the lack of leadership on the right, Fox News has emerged as the central enemy and antagonist of the Obama administration, our Congressional majorities and the progressive movement as a whole.”
“We must take Fox News head-on in a well funded, presidential-style campaign to discredit and embarrass the network, making it illegitimate in the eyes of news consumers.”
What Frisch proceeded to suggest, however, went well beyond what legitimate presidential campaigns attempt. “We should hire private investigators to look into the personal lives of Fox News anchors, hosts, reporters, prominent contributors, senior network and corporate staff,” he wrote.
Fox News Channel anchor Bret Baier recalls that when he started at the network at a bureau in Atlanta with little more than a cellphone and fax machine in his apartment.Still fair and balanced after all these years.
"Back then, I would call people for a quote and some thought I was from the same network that carried 'The Simpsons'," said Baier in a telephone interview.
No one makes that mistake now. Fox News Channel turns 15 today as the reigning ratings champ among the 24-hour news channels. Since 2002 it has averaged more viewers than rivals CNN and MSNBC, and the lead has widened in recent years.
Owned by media mogul Rupert Murdock and crafted by Chairman Roger Ailes, Fox News has sold its audience on the "fair and balanced" motto and succeeded with a mix of news and commentary from personalities with strong opinions such as Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren and the recently canceled Glenn Beck.
Other keys to Fox News Channel's ratings success: flashy graphics, news delivered with a sense of urgency, attractive anchors and reporters with distinct style, a patriotic undertone and stories aimed at Middle America.
The network is celebrating its birthday all month, and a special, "Fox News: 15 Years — Fair and Balanced," airs at 10 tonight. Hosted by former CNN anchor Bill Hemmer, it features interviews with longtime anchors and hosts like Baier, who joined the network in 1998.
If you don’t watch CNN or MSNBC, you’re hardly alone. But Bill Carter at the New York Times is very interested in their jockeying for a distant second place in the ratings:Meanwhile, Fox News just continues to kick their rear ends and laugh all the way to the bank.
The ratings results for the month of September show that CNN, long relegated to third place in the prime-time cable news competition, is edging its way back up, while MSNBC is moving in the other direction.
For the month, CNN averaged 257,000 viewers in prime time in the category that counts most to the networks — viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 — because that is where the advertising money goes for news programming. MSNBC was just barely ahead with 269,000 viewers. (Neither approached the leader, Fox News, with 526,000).
Both CNN and MSNBC had one especially strong night because of the Republican presidential debates.That’s right, they’ve discovered the secret to ratings success: Republicans. Otherwise they’re each stuck with a viewer base roughly the size of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

In Orbitz, though, DropFox may have already bitten off more than it can chew. The company is not only refusing to buckle under the pressure — which includes an online petition signed by 40,000 people asking it to ditch Fox News — but it is striking back at Media Matters, warning the organization it is risking its credibility by attacking Orbitz.The lefties never have understood capitalism and clearly don't understand why companies like Orbitz or Southwest Airlines, another boycott target, advertise on Fox News. They're not putting their money into Fox advertising for ideological reasons, they're advertising there because Fox attracts a huge number of eyeballs in key demographic groups that are likely to purchase the advertiser's products. Dropping their Fox advertising would only ensure a loss of business, both from the lost advertising, and from the millions of Fox News watchers who would be offended by the action.
“This is a political organization that has been funded pretty extensively to go after one network, and we aren’t going to engage in that fight,” Orbitz spokesman Brian Hoyt said.
“We have a strict policy of tolerance and non-discrimination, and that means we don’t favor one political side over another. Tolerance is a two-way street,” he said. “We’re going to advertise on conservative TV stations, liberal TV stations and — if there are any out there — unbiased news broadcasts.”

The evidence DropFox and Media Matters have provided Orbitz was not convincing.
“We haven’t bowed to any boycott in the past, and we won’t bow to these types of smear campaigns in the future,” Hoyt said.
May 1st, the day Osama bin Laden's life came to an end, and the day he found out that the story about the 72 virgins waiting for him on the other side was bunk.As I recall, John Scott was on Fox that morning on 9/11 when the attacks occurred and was hustled into the studio to anchor the early part of their coverage. His death brings to an end a tumultuous life that saw bin Laden go from being the carefree son of a Saudi billionaire, to terrorist leader and the most wanted man in the world.
Bin Laden created and funded the al Qaeda terror network, which was responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. The Saudi exile had been a man on the run since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan overthrew the ruling Taliban regime, which harbored bin Laden.
In a video filmed two months after the Sept. 11 attacks, bin Laden gloated about the attack, saying it had exceeded even his "optimistic" calculations.
"Our terrorism is against America. Our terrorism is a blessed terrorism to prevent the unjust person from committing injustice and to stop American support for Israel, which kills our sons," he said in the video.
“One thing I think should make clear – the people coming after us from every live shot here, these people hate,” Tobin said. “These are people who don’t respect diverse viewpoints. In fact, they’re so afraid I’ll present a diverse viewpoint, that’s why they try to heckle me and shut down every live shot. They’ve made it clear, that what they want to make it harder for me to do my job. They are proud of that when they disrupt a live shot, when they really trample over the First Amendment rights or the First Amendment’s obligations of a reporter. Now, I am not saying that’s all of the people. Those are the people that come here and heckle and try to disrupt things. I look in their eyes – there is hate in their eyes. They don’t want to hear any kind of viewpoint that is different from their own. That’s why they do what they do.”Tobin was assaulted by one of the union thugs. When you have Democrats demonizing Fox News it gives their weaker-minded followers the idea that assaulting members of that organization is okay.

Every friend of Loughner who has characterized his politics has described him as liberal. Not one called him a conservative.
One friend says Loughner never listened to talk radio or watched the TV news. Throw in "never read books" and you have the dictionary definition of a liberal. Being completely uninformed is precisely how most liberals stay liberal.
You think the most essential purpose of journalism and the reason the Founders included freedom of the press in the First Amendment was to insure independent reporting about government, politicians, and public policy issues, right?Sammon's error, in the eyes of the gotcha crowd, is he insisted Fox News reporters look at all sides of the issue and not just the politically correct one. And, as it turns out, he was right to urge skepticism given that ClimateGate pretty much proved the whole man-made global warming argument to be a hoax.
Well, you must be wrong because Fox News Washington Bureau Chief Bill Sammon is getting a raft of garbage from liberal activists masquerading as journalists at Media Matters, some liberal bloggers and a scattering of real journalists who ought to know better.
Why? Politico’s headline captures the controversy perfectly: “Fox editor urged climate skepticism.”
A journalist being skeptical? Who would ever have thought such a thing could be. I don’t know, maybe anybody who has heard this (attributed long ago to a crusty desk editor at the illustrious City News Bureau in Chicago): “If your mother tells you she loves you, check it out.”
In other words, we journalists are paid to BE SKEPTICAL.
For the record, here’s what Sammon said in a Dec. 8, 2009, memo to his reporting staff shortly after the Climategate global warming email scandal erupted:
“Given the controversy over the veracity of climate change data, we should refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question. It is not our place as journalists to assert such notions as facts, especially as this debate intensifies.”

Now that Fox News contributor Juan Williams has been dropped from National Public Radio, the liberal website Media Matters for America is now targeting Mara Liasson, the last remaining NPR correspondent who works with Fox News.Both NPR and Media Matters are puppets dancing to George Soros' tune. After seeing what happened with Williams, Mara Liasson might be hoping to get fired from NPR. She'd enjoy a new multi-million dollar contract.
“NPR’s Mara Liasson and her long-running association with Fox News has often raised questions. This might be the proper time for NPR to finally address that thorny issue,” wrote Media Matters columnist Eric Boehlert Thursday in a post entitled “What about Mara Liasson?” “[I]f you look at NPR’s code of ethics, there’s simply no way Liasson should be making appearances on Fox.” [...]
Media Matters and NPR both announced this week they were receiving million-dollar grants from left-wing billionaire George Soros.
