Congress - A Swing and a Miss

This from Newsmax:

WASHINGTON -- Sen. John McCain is demanding immediate action by representatives of major league baseball's players and owners to tighten the sport's drug-testing policy "to restore the integrity of baseball."

Expressing dismay over recurring reports of steroid abuse by some of the game's top stars, the Arizona senator repeated a threat he made before the last season to legislate a stricter rules if the sport fails to police itself.

Why is it the business of Congress to oversee baseball? Don't the boys in Washington have enough to do without meddling in a privately owned and operated sport? The last thing we need is more regulation, and we certainly don't need congressional involvement in professional sports.

The sports fan and the marketplace will determine how successful baseball is at restoring its honor and dignity. I'm sure many fans have been suspicious of some of baseball's stars and the oversized muscles and nearly superhuman strength some of them seem to have. Baseball knows that it must fix these problems quickly or the fans will decide to quit attending the games.

Baseball is more than able to police its own situation leagues and set-up and enforce its own rules. Sen. McCain - how about you go back and try and do something important like fixing Social Security or the tax code, and leave baseball to the leagues.
