A few days ago I posted on the invasion of Painted Lady butterflies that are sweeping through the Southland. Yesterday was hot and sunny, which is apparently just what they like when they travel, and the skies were once again filled with them.
I had to travel to Ramona and back, and along the coast south of San Onofre the air was thick with them. A 70 mph southbound car hitting a 10 mph northbound butterfly does not work out well for the butterfly. My car looks like it was painted with a high velocity butterfly gun.
Coming back northbound the traffic slowed suddenly as we rounded the curve as you enter San Clemente, and the reason was the butterflies. They were so thick across the freeway right there it looked like it was snowing.
CheatSeekingMissiles (who lives not far from me) has also noticed the invasion and has a much more poetic posting on the subject, along with a photo of the little creatures.
