Durbin Apologizes (no, really!)

Sen. John McCain predicted on Sunday's Meet the Press that Sen. Dick Durbin would apologize for his stupid statements before the week was out. Yesterday Dem leaders said the Durbin had issued his final statement, thus ending the matter, and they would no longer talk about. Several Dems even refused to comment on the situation.

Well it looks like McCain was right - Durbin just apologized to the Senate (hat tip HolyCoast Mom & Dad). A rough transcript is here, and I'll post a link to the FoxNews piece once they complete it.

Now we all remember that Sen. Trent Lott went on a national apology tour following his remarks at the 100th birthday party for Sen. Strom Thurmond, but that wasn't enough. He was finally driven out of his leadership position in the Senate by his own party.

What's the likelihood that the Senate Dems will treat Durbin the same way? (I've got oceanfront property in Arizona for you if you think that's going to happen.)

UPDATE: Here's the link to the FoxNews story.

Katherine Lopez at The Corner comments on one of Durbin's remarks:
Durbin hurts himself when he says: "Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line," the Illinois Democrat said. "To them I extend my heartfelt apologies."

How about just saying I crossed the line. I was wrong. I'm sorry--especially to every American serving the United States in the military.?
