Over the history of our country there have been several significant population migrations, and I'm wondering if the hurricane has started the next one. Many southerners moved north during the Industrial Revolution, Okies came west during the Dust Bowl, and now the entire city of New Orleans plus parts of Mississippi and Alabama are relocating elsewhere.
Tens of thousands of people have been moved to Houston, thousands more will be heading to San Antonio, untold other folks will be heading to other parts of Texas, Louisiana, or who knows where. The question now is, will they ever come back?
You have to know that some of these people may find be able to find jobs and homes in their new locations, and even if New Orleans or their former towns are rebuilt, they may never be back. I think sociologists will be studying this event, and the resulting population shift, for many years.
