In the past three months, Democratic presidential candidates raised an estimated $81.2 million compared to about $46.6 million for Republicans. So far Republicans have been generally unimpresses with the GOP field. When you combine that with the antics of the Republicans in the Senate who desperately tried to pass President Bush's amnesty bill, there's not much to inspire Republicans to open their wallets and give. There's definitely more excitement on the Dems side.
“It’s not a good sign for the Republicans at this point,” said Jan Baran, a campaign finance expert and former general counsel of the Republican National Committee. “They’ve got to be hoping that they can energize their base as well as independents between now and November of 2008, and if they can’t, they’re going to be in trouble.”
Perhaps once the field narrows down a bit, and should Fred Thompson finally jump in and make for as good a candidate as I hope he will be, GOP voters might start to get excited once again.
