Another Church Fire in Los Angeles

There have been a series of church arsons in Los Angeles, and last night a church in Wilmington was hit for the second time in a year:

A fire broke out Wednesday evening inside a church in Wilmington, authorities said.

The fire at the Harbor Christian Church, at 1551 N. Wilmington Blvd., was reported at about 10:51 p.m., Cecil Manresa of the Los Angeles City Fire Department said.

Arriving firefighters said they discovered heavy smoke emerging from the two-story church with flames burning on the first and second floors, Manresa said.

No injuries have been reported, he said.

The Harbor Christian Church is also a school, and has been serving the area for several decades.
The church's offices were burned out about a year ago in another incident, and according to TV reports this morning there's some fear that neighbors of the church may be angry because the church has been growing and creating more traffic in the area. This fire hit the temporary offices and nursery school. The main sanctuary was spared, though on TV last night it looked like the whole thing was going to go.

The Feds are sending in one of their church arson teams to investigate.

What's interesting is that despite being a high-profile incident shown live on TV at about 10:30 last night, none of the L.A./Long Beach newspapers have the story on their websites. I can understand the newspapers not having time to get the story in their print editions, but you'd think they'd be able to get in on their web pages. I had to find the story on a TV station's site.

That doesn't speak well for the print media.

UPDATE: The previous fire at this church was accidental, and it looks like this one might be too. Reports are there may have been a problem with a waterheater that set this one off. I hope so. I'd hate to think somebody was trying to torch the place.

However, two accidental fires in one year will spell insurance problems when renewal time comes along. They better click on the box below and read that item before they renew.
