What is the Times' excuse for not releasing the tape?
"The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it," said the newspaper's editor, Russ Stanton...Since when has the Times cared to sit on a potentially explosive story? That excuse may mollify their colleagues in the press, but a lot of bloggers are calling B.S.
Doug Ross has a confidential source of his own who claims to have seen the tape and offers this description:
Saw a clip from the tape. Reason we can't release it is because statements Obama said to rile audience up during toast. He congratulates Khalidi for his work saying "Israel has no God-given right to occupy Palestine" plus there's been "genocide against the Palestinian people by Israelis."The tape will come out...after the election when it no longer matters. The Times will have a sudden change of ethics.
It would be really controversial if it got out. That's why they will not even let a transcript get out.
If you'd like to encourage them to release this tape now, you can email their reader representative here.
UPDATE: There's now a $150,000 reward to anyone who releases a copy of the tape. Hey there, LA Times staffer with access to the tape, your paper just laid off another 75 people and your turn could be next. Release the tape, take the money and get out of there.
