I love to watch poker tournaments on TV and over the last couple of years I've learned all kinds of terminology that goes with the game. When a player takes a bad beat and begins to play recklessly after that, usually out of anger, it's called "steaming". There's a political equivalent to steaming and we're seeing it coming from the Dems in regards to Karl Rove's speech.
The Dems took a bad beat on Durbin, after thinking they could bluff their way through that without any damage. Although the press didn't much care about Durbin's remarks, the blogosphere and talk radio ripped him and the Dems a new one, and despite their best efforts to ignore questions and refuse comment, they weren't able to silence the issue. Durbin ending up folding like a cheap suit, which really made the hard core left mad (I know because some of them have been writing to me).
Then along comes Rove who gave a speech comparing conservatives to liberals, and the Dems, still angry at the Durbin situation, compounded their problems with brainless calls for apologies and resignations. It's getting downright comical, and the more the Dems protest, the more the White House ignores them or comes out in support of Rove, and the madder the Dems get.
Last night I saw film of various Dem House members venting during floor speeches. One guy called Rove a "third rate Joe McCarthy", and another even suggested that Rove had "slandered the troops", his theory being that Dems were slandered and there's a remote possibility that a few troops are Dems. Really fever swamp stuff, and I don't remember this same guy running to the defense of the troops when they were slandered by Turban Durbin.
I'm sure there are troops that are Dems, but even the Dems know they could never win an election if the voting base was made up entirely of military members. They'd get skunked. That's why they tried so hard to invalidate military voters during the 2000 election mess in Florida (if you don't believe me, read the book).
All in all, this is better entertainment than you'll find on most TV networks. Who knew that C-Span would become the next Comedy Channel? The Rove-a-Dope is still working.
