In Honor of AOL's Purchase of HuffPo for $315 Million I'm Reducing My AOL Bill by 60%

After hearing that AOL is paying $315 million for lefty blog site Huffington Post and putting Ariana Huffington in charge of AOL's news pages, I decided it was time to take another look at my monthly AOL expense.  I've been a member of AOL since May, 1995.  I wasn't the first, but I was a pretty early member of that service.

I don't remember how much it cost back then, but at the highpoint I think it was up to $23.99 per month.  Then, thanks to competition and declining membership, AOL completely revamped their pricing and basically began giving it away for free.  Or, for some of us who chose to do so, you could pay a marginal amount to maintain your virus protection and still have AOL available via dial-up if high speed internet was unavailable.  I think that started out at $9.99, but recently rose to $11.99.

Now that I have a smartphone the prospect of being without high speed internet isn't such a big deal, so this morning I looked at the pricing again and chose the $4.99 plan that keeps my virus software up-to-date.  I actually began migrating a lot of my regular email to Gmail a few weeks ago when I found it worked better on my Android phone, and I'd probably dump AOL altogether if my family didn't have all their accounts under mine.

I've rarely ever used AOL News for blog material, and will be even less likely to now that it's being managed by Huffington.  AOL News has been pretty evenhanded for the most part, though I do remember taking them to task when Cindy Sheehan first came on the scene in 2005.  I can imagine that every lefty talking point will now become a headline on AOL.

Anti-War Movement is Dying Away

It was on a Sunday morning in August of 2005 that I wrote my first piece involving Cindy Sheehan.  I had never heard of her before that day, and I was shocked to see that the lead story on AOL News that morning was about some crazy woman who had decided to set up camp in the ditch across from President George Bush's Crawford Ranch to protest the war.  Thanks to the general boredom experienced by the press corps stuck in Crawford and the fact there wasn't much other news going on in the world (this was before Katrina arrived), Sheehan got way more attention than she deserved and became a cause celebre for the left.

Now the anti-war movement is dying.  Why?  Because the people that supported them were not so much anti-war as they were anti-Bush:

“A lot of the people who were part of this movement have retreated,” Code Pink’s Benjamin said. “They wanted to give up on the timetable [for withdrawing from Iraq]. Some are still reluctant to criticize a Democratic president now with the midterms coming up.”

The staggering economy has hit the movement hard: Just a few years ago, some groups raised millions of dollars in donations and mobilized legions of supporters to rallies in Washington, D.C., and New York; now, United for Peace and Justice – which had a full-time, paid staff and a budget of over $1 million – relies on volunteers working without a headquarters and with less than $100,000 to spend.

“That says a lot about where our masses are when it comes to getting out against the wars,” said Michael McPherson, the co-convener of United for Peace and Justice. “If people are deciding between trying to figure out if you’re going to have a job and ending the war in Afghanistan…trying to figure out how to keep your job is going to win every time.”

But Sheehan, whose son died in Iraq and who kept vigil outside Bush’s Crawford ranch to protest the war, had long abandoned hope that the activists would fight as hard once Obama was elected. Groups like MoveOn.org, in particular, are more interested in politics than in peace, she said.

“I basically think that it’s over,” Sheehan said. “And the reason that it’s over is that so many of those same groups that you’re talking about supported Obama…I just don’t think that if you’re anti-war you can support somebody who is for war.”

It's no surprise to most of us that once Obama was elected it probably wouldn't matter what he did in regards to the war, the anti-war crowd was going to melt away. Their commitment to liberal politics far outweighs their commitment to stopping war.

Jerry Brown Goes After Sarah Palin

Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown wants to be California governor again and what better way to appeal to the nutty left than by going after Sarah Palin (h/t Don Surber):

California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Tuesday his office had launched an investigation into the finances of a state university foundation and the alleged dumping of documents related to Sarah Palin’s upcoming speech at the school.

Brown also intends to look into whether the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation violated public disclosure laws.

“This is not about Sarah Palin,” Brown said in a prepared statement. “The issues are public disclosure and financial accountability in organizations embedded in state-run universities.”

Baloney, of course it's about Sarah Palin. Since when has the Attorney General ever cared about speakers at a Cal State University campus?

My daughter goes to a different Cal State campus and when she was a freshman moonbat antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan spoke at her school.  Where was Jerry Brown's investigation into that speech?

What's funny is the faux outrage some in the media are offering over some of the provisions in Palin's personal services contract that was dug out of the university dumpster.  The media was treating her like a diva because there were requirements for first class airfare or private jets, and bottled water with bendable straws.  Of course, every high level celeb has similar contracts.  I'll bet you'll find very similar clauses in Al Gore's speaking contracts.

UPDATE:  The contract was stolen from an administrator's office, not "found" by activist students.

The Mama Moonbat Camp-out

She's baaaaaack:

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is restarting her campaign against wars in Iraq and Afghanistan today, setting up tents and teaching protest seminars near the Washington Monument.

Dubbed "Camp OUT NOW," the protest is geared to pressure President Obama and Democrats, whom Sheehan says have abandoned the anti-war cause now that they have control of the White House and Congress.

"Obama said there'd be one combat battalion coming home per month, and that has not happened," Sheehan says. "We still have significant troops in Iraq, and he's ramped up in Afghanistan.

"I don't think this is what people understood they were voting for. I think they were voting for a change."

The troops are still there but the unicorns and rainbows are all gone.

Peaceniks Plan to Protest George W. Bush in Dana Point

The former president is coming to the Holy Coast this week to accept an award from a Catholic pro-life group and the lefties are fuming:

Peace activists are planning on Thursday to protest George W. Bush's visit here to speak and accept an award for his pro-life efforts at a Catholic summit, even though it is not entirely clear when specifically the former president will attend.

It is "outrageous that he's receiving a pro-life award," said Sharon Tipton, an organizer of the protest with a group called the Orange County Peace Coalition, which she described as an umbrella group for other local peace organizations.

"It's an Orwellian irony because Bush has caused so many deaths with an illegal war," she said.

Legatus, a Catholic organization for business and civic leaders, is holding its annual summit Thursday through Saturday at the St. Regis resort, where Bush is expected to be honored.

Isn't Cindy Sheehan available? It would be just like old times to have her sitting in a ditch across from the St. Regis.

Mama Moonbat Protests At....Dick Cheney's House

Just how out-of-touch is Cindy Sheehan these days?

LANGLEY, Va. (AP) -- A group led by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan has protested near the CIA's headquarters and former Vice President Dick Cheney's home in northern Virginia.

They were protesting the use of unmanned drone aircraft to attack al-Qaida and Taliban targets.

The group of about 70 people rallied alongside a highway near the CIA compound Saturday. About half then marched to Cheney's nearby street and stayed for 20 minutes. Police kept them from going down his street.

Pretty sad.

Anti-War Left Starting to Wake Up Again

The anti-war left has been in a period of mourning since George W. Bush left office. The wars they opposed were still going on, but they didn't dare criticize The One for not ending them right away. Since he had been anointed to save us all, who were they to interfere with his agenda?

Well, they're starting to wake up to the fact that Obama is not ending the wars as he promised (and Obama is waking up to the fact that it's easier to end wars in campaign rhetoric than in real life) and after so many months of disappointment, they're beginning to be nuisances again:

White House officials are increasingly worried liberal, anti-war Democrats will demand a premature end to the Afghanistan war before President Barack Obama can show signs of progress in the eight-year conflict, according to senior administration sources.

These fears, which the officials have discussed on the condition of anonymity over the past few weeks, are rising fast after U.S. casualties hit record levels in July and August.

The aides also expressed concern that Afghan election returns, still being tallied, will result in a narrow reelection for President Hamid Karzai that could result in qualms about his legitimacy — “Tehran II,” as one official put it, in reference to the disputed Iranian election.

The result: some think Afghanistan — not health care — will be the issue that defines the early years of the Obama administration.

“There’s no question that the drumbeat is going to get louder and louder on the left, and you’ll see some fall-off on the right,” said Matt Bennett of the think tank Third Way, the moderate voice of the progressive movement. “His supporters on the Hill are fighting a really serious political battle to keep the criticism under control.”

It's not that they haven't tried to get the media's attention to their anti-war activities. Cindy Sheehan's Traveling Ditch People Circus set up camp in Marxist Martha's Vineyard only to be told that the media was no longer interested in her sad story. Funny how her "absolute moral authority" was so quickly lost with a Democrat in the White House.

With bad news coming out of Afghanistan every day there will be more and more pressure on Obama to cut-and-run and the anti-war left will feel evermore empowered.

I'm wondering when Harry Reid will declare the war lost, like he did in 2007 regarding Iraq... right before we won it. Maybe that's what Obama needs to succeed in Afghanistan - a declaration by Harry Reid.

Poor Mama Moonbat

Being the spokesnut for the antiwar movement was quite a heady position when Republicans were running the show, but now that America is all rainbows and unicorns, the media no longer needs Cindy Sheehan:

In an appearance August 18 on WLS radio in Chicago, ABC News anchor Charles Gibson was asked about anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan's plans to travel to Martha's Vineyard next week, where she will protest the Iraq and Afghanistan wars while President Obama is vacationing there. Gibson, whose newscast and network featured Sheehan when she led anti-war protests outside President Bush's Texas ranch in 2005, answered, "Enough already."

That's a remarkably different stance from the one Gibson took four years ago. On August 9, 2005, the ABC anchor conducted an extensive on-air interview with Sheehan. "Cindy Sheehan is her name," Gibson began. "She says she's not moving until the president meets with her, and I had a chance to speak with her a few minutes ago. Cindy Sheehan, bottom line, what do you hope to accomplish with all this?" During the next week, Gibson and ABC continued to cover Sheehan. On August 17, 2005, when Sheehan left Crawford, Gibson reported, "We're going to turn next to the standoff that is playing out near President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Cindy Sheehan, you know, the mother who lost a son in Iraq, is now on the move, but she's still standing her ground. ABC's Geoff Morrell is in Crawford with the details…" The next day, Gibson reported, "All across the country last night, people held candlelight vigils in support of Cindy Sheehan…" Sheehan was mentioned in several other ABC newscasts, as well.

It's tough to be a ditch person that nobody wants.

The Return of Mama Moonbat

The left has been strangely silent about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since rainbows and unicorns came into power in January, but our favorite ditch person, Cindy Sheehan, Mama Moonbat herself, wants the antiwar left to mimic the Tea Party protesters who are thwarting Obamacare. The antiwar left griped for years and held big rallies, but never had the kind of effect on national policy that the anti-Obamacare folks have had in a few weeks.

Why? Republicans knew she and her merry band of Code Pinkos were a bunch of kooks and they weren't intimidated. They just ignored the petulant outbursts. Obama knows he's not dealing with kooks, but people who could really make an impact on his presidency.

Sheehan is headed to Martha's Vineyard where Obama will be vacationing to repeat her famous Crawford Ditch Protest, this time targeting President Hopenchange. From her statement:

First of all, no good social or economic change will come about with the continuation or escalation of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We simply can't afford to continue this tragically expensive foreign policy.

Secondly, we as a movement need to continue calling for an immediate end to the occupations even when there is a Democrat in the Oval Office. There is still no Noble Cause no matter how we examine the policies.

Thirdly, the body bags aren't taking a vacation and as the U.S.-led violence surges in Afghanistan and Pakistan, so are the needless deaths on every side.

And, finally, if the right-wing can force the government to drop any kind of public option or government supported health care, then we need to exert the same kind of pressure to force a speedy end to the occupations.

Let's see if Obama is as tolerant of her protests as Bush was.

Mama Moonbat Just Can't Get Over George Bush

It's the return of the ditch people:

Cindy Sheehan, who drew national attention for camping outside former President George W. Bush's ranch in protest of the Iraq War, is following him to Dallas. Sheehan will lead a demonstration Monday protesting "crimes against humanity."

"We can't allow George Bush's crimes to be forgotten just because he is not in office anymore," she said in an e-mail.

While most people in Preston Hollow have gone out of their way to welcome the former president and first lady home, they're not exactly rolling out the welcome mat for Sheehan.

"Go away," resident Kathie Taub said. "Go back! Leave us alone!"

Taub said Sheehan had already protested and should "now leave everybody alone."

"She has already made her opinion known, and it is getting old," Michael Taub said. "She needs to go back to wherever she came from."

Neighbor Victor Toledo echoed the sentiment.

Cindy Sheehan is stuck in a time warp.

Iraq 5 Year Anniversary

Today marks two anniversaries - the 5th year of the war in Iraq and the day the swallows return to nearby Capistrano. I think by the end of the day we'll find that there's more collective intelligence in a flock of swallows than a flock of antiwar protesters.

Take for instance this photo from Zombie up in Berkeley where Cindy Sheehan was making an appearance:

Apparently English grammar is not a priority in their lives (for any antiwar types reading this post, it should read "too many", not "to many"). Always the entertainers.

President Bush made a major speech on the Iraq issue:

WASHINGTON - Five years after launching the U.S. invasion of Iraq, President Bush is making some of his most expansive claims of success in the fighting there. Bush said last year's troop buildup has turned Iraq around and produced "the first large-scale Arab uprising against Osama bin Laden."

Massive anti-war demonstrations were planned in downtown Washington to mark Wednesday's anniversary of the war, which has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 U.S. troops. Across the river at the Pentagon, Bush was to give a speech to warn that backsliding in recent progress fueled by the increase of 30,000 troops he ordered more than a year ago cannot be allowed.

"The challenge in the period ahead is to consolidate the gains we have made and seal the extremists' defeat," he said in excerpts the White House released Tuesday night. "We have learned through hard experience what happens when we pull our forces back too fast — the terrorists and extremists step in, fill the vacuum, establish safe havens and use them to spread chaos and carnage."

Bush added: "The successes we are seeing in Iraq are undeniable, yet some in Washington still call for retreat."

Democrats took a different view.

Imagine that. So, how did the Dems react?

"On this grim milestone, it is worth remembering how we got into this situation, and thinking about how best we can get out," said Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. "The tasks that remain in Iraq — to bring an end to sectarian conflict, to devise a way to share political power and to create a functioning government that is capable of providing for the needs of the Iraqi people — are tasks that only the Iraqis can complete."

Wow, he even worked in "grim milestone", the media's favorite catch phrase for every phase of the war. However, since Dingell is a Michigan Democrat and his own party won't count his primary vote, I don't think we need to count his opinion here.

Look for more protests and mudslinging today, but the only mudslinging that will have any meaning is the mud the swallows will be slinging to build their nests around the mission in San Juan Capistrano.

Mama Moonbat Gets Booed in Pasadena

The threatened "hundreds or thousands" of pro-impeachment protesters led by Cindy Sheehan at the Tournament of Roses Parade ended up being about 100, and they were booed by the spectators:

Twenty-three people were arrested by Tuesday afternoon, including one protester, Pasadena Police Department Lt. Keith Jones said. Jones said the protester was "arrested for holding up a sign that blocked other patrons view of the parade."

Dozens of anti-war protesters led by "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan staked out spots across from television cameras, hoisting signs reading "Impeachment is Patriotic."

After the procession's last float inched out to start along the parade's 5 1/2-mile route, a group of more than 100 anti-war protesters marched behind it, including Sheehan. Parade watchers sitting in the grandstand booed and yelled at the protesters.

"This is not the occasion for this," Mary Feichtel, 63, of Florida, said of the protests.

Sheehan spoke later to a gathering of protesters at Pasadena City Hall.

I watched the entire parade (while working on my computer) and never saw any sign of protests on the HGTV broadcast. The other networks may have picked them up, but they didn't seem to make much of an impact.

Once again the wacky left has overplayed their hand and turned people away from their cause. Of course, their cause is silly to begin with. With barely a year left in Bush's term, there will be no impeachment regardless of how many temper tantrums Sheehan and her Code Pinko bunch throw. The Dems won't risk turning large parts of the country completely against them in a presidential election year.

It's time for Mama Moonbat to move on.

I Think They Should Follow the Horses

As I write this I'm watching the HGTV broadcast of the Tournament of Roses Parade (this is one of those times when I have no control over the TV remote). For some reason the parade organizers have decided that they have to have some sort of "Kum-Ba-Yah" big opening number every year. Last year's was pretty lame and this year's production number featuring the "Up With People" cast, a bunch of Boy Scouts, and the Missouri marching band wasn't much better. Lots of international brotherhood and love hoohah, all lip-synched to an overproduced score.

I did learn something, though. When the Queen's float came by the announcer informed us that over 1,100 girls had tried out for the court...and two guys. If one of them had been chosen it certainly would have given a new meaning to the title "Queen". They always pick an ethnically diverse court, so how long until the ACLU sues to demand a guy in the Queen's court?

Although there will be more than 50 spectacular floats, lots of bands and lots of horse units, the most interesting part of the parade will be the performance of the "Marching Morons Impeachment Drill Team" which is scheduled to march behind the street sweepers at the end of the parade. Personally, I would have lined them up behind a horse unit. That unit will be led by none other than Cindy Sheehan, who is described by Instapundit as "not the freshest flower in the bunch".

It will be interesting to see if the network parade coverage stays on the parade long enough to pick them up. Of course, at the end of the parade it may be hard to pick them out from the other horse's butts.

UPDATE: Neither HGTV nor the local LA channel gave any coverage to the protesters. They cut away as soon as the last unit (the LA Sheriff's Department mounted police) passed their cameras.

Mama Moonbat to Join the Malcontents in Pasadena

I previously posted about the plans of the White Rose Coalition to protest during the Rose Parade on Tuesday morning. They seem to think that prancing around on Colorado Blvd. and littering the area with flyers will make people want to impeach Bush and Cheney. Joining them will be none other than Cindy Sheehan, Mama Moonbat as she's known at this site:

Sheehan, the outspoken San Francisco Bay area activist whose son was killed in Iraq, is campaigning for Congress against Rep. Nancy Pelosi and calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. She will join other pro-impeachment and anti-war groups at the parade, according to her sister, Dede Miller.

As many as 1,000 supporters are expected to rally before and after the parade and distribute 20,000 pamphlets while flying 300 banners along the parade route, said Peter Thottam, executive director of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center.

I'll bet you didn't know there was a Los Angeles National Impeachment Center, but there is - at least since last July. I guess they didn't think to organize that fine institution during the Clinton impeachment.

The White Rose Fools aren't the only malcontents that will be present in Pasadena:

Chinese Americans who claim they were victims of political or religious persecution in China are criticizing the $400,000 Beijing Olympics float.

(Mayor) Bogaard said the city cited security considerations in turning down the group's proposal for a demonstration along the parade route involving a large band and several vehicles.

"The tournament views the float as I do, as a celebration of the Olympic Games, not as a subject of criticism of the Chinese," Bogaard said. "It is my hope that as China emerges more and more into the world community it will be inclined to respect all human and civil rights."

Protest organizer John Li, a member of Caltech's chapter of Falun Gong, the spiritual movement outlawed by the Chinese government in 1999, promised his group would be seen if not heard.

"We are going to ask the audience on the road to turn their back when the Asian float arrives, and show banners. We have to send a strong message to say no to human rights abuses in China," Li said.

I hope they all make complete asses of themselves and it's carried on national TV when they do. If anything, this will damage their impeachment efforts more than it will help. Once again the whackos will be their own worst enemy.

The forecast for Tuesday is high winds in the LA Basin which may prove problematic for lightweights like Sheehan.

War at the Crawford Peace House

Peaceniks can get pretty cranky when you get then all together, such as in Cindy Sheehan's Crawford "Peace" House:

With allegations of money mismanagement, threats of court action and some members leaving, a group that has sponsored war protests in President Bush's adopted hometown has been anything but peaceful.

The Crawford Peace House recently lost its corporate charter with the state, and a former member who now has rights to the name is threatening legal action because the group continues operating.

Sara L. Oliver and some others are calling for a state investigation as to why only $14,700 is now in its bank account, saying tens of thousands donated during Cindy Sheehan's 2005 war protest are unaccounted for.

"There are people who have said, `Don't say anything because you'll hurt the peace movement,'" Oliver said. "But if the peace movement isn't pure and transparent and holy as it can be at its heart, then it's just like George Bush: lying, thieving, conniving, backstabbing bastards."

If there's a collection of adjectives that don't describe today's peace movement it's "pure, transparent and holy". Some smart operator has obviously figured out that these people are a bunch of saps and has robbed them blind. That somehow seems appropriate.

The Morons Return to Crawford

Like the swallow return to San Juan Capstrano, or the buzzards returning to Hinckley, OH, the morons have returned to Crawford, TX:

A year after her first war protest in President Bush's adopted hometown attracted thousands and reinvigorated the nation's peace movement, Cindy Sheehan resumed her vigil Sunday.

Under the blazing Texas sun, Sheehan and more than 50 demonstrators again marched a mile and a half toward Bush's ranch, stopping at a roadblock. As Secret Service agents stood silently, Sheehan held up her California driver's license and said she wanted to meet with the president.

"It doesn't say my new address, but I do live here now," said Sheehan, who lives in Berkeley, Calif., and recently bought land in Crawford for war protests. "My name is Cindy and Bush killed my son."

The group then chanted, "This is what democracy looks like! This is what democracy sounds like!" and a few people sang "This Land Is Your Land" while standing near the roadblock before returning to the protest site.

I love the job Tony Snow is doing as White House press secretary. When asked about the moron colony which was being reestablished in Crawford, he had this to say:

White House spokesman Tony Snow has said that neither Bush nor his staff plan to meet with Sheehan.

"I would advise her to bring water, Gatorade or both," Snow said when asked about Sheehan during a press briefing Friday. "Honestly, when you're talking about the kind of issues that we're talking about, Cindy Sheehan hasn't risen to the level of staff meetings at this point."

Is Gatorade allowed on her fast?

Sheehan Deceived Crawford Property Owner

It was reported a few days ago that Mama Moonbat Cindy Sheehan had bought her own little compound in Crawford, TX near President Bush's home. I was wondering why anyone in that area would willingly sell to Sheehan, and now it appears that the only way she could buy property there was to deceive the sellers:

Peace Supporter, Gerry Fonseca, says he purchased the 5-acre parcel, which cost more than $52,000. It was bought with the money frome her son, Casey's, life insurance policy.

"I doubt they would have sold her the property if she tried to buy it herself," said Foncseca.

"I feel deceived," said Celia Ramsey, who sold the land to Cindy Sheehan through a third party. She talked to News Channel 25 exclusively on the matter. "I would have never sold it to Sheehan. Nobody wants them here."

The Ramsey's claim Fonseca told them he was an evacuee from Hurricane Katrina.

Fonseca told News Channel 25 he "apologized to the Ramsey's for the inconvenience, but we (Gold Star Families For Peace) are going to do everything in our power to not disturb them."

Ramsey told News Channel 25, she plans on talking to a lawyer over the matter.

And then there's this:

"I am very sad it came to this point where we had to buy a permanent home," said Sheehan. "I thought President Bush would have resigned by now. But I am happy about a permanent home in Crawford."

How many times have we heard Sheehan bellow about how Bush should be impeached because "he lied to the American people". Hypocrisy, thy name is Cindy.

Prediction: Bush leaves office as scheduled at noon on January 20, 2009, and at 12:01 Sheehan eats a gun. The woman will have nothing left to live for.

Like many folks in President Bush's adopted hometown, 83-year-old Robert Westerfield isn't exactly rolling out the welcome mat for the town's newest resident: war protester Cindy Sheehan.

"I wish she'd stay away. Crawford's a Republican town, and she's a dumb Democrat," Westerfield, a lifelong Crawford resident, said Friday while sitting on a bench outside a gas station on Main Street.

Very perceptive guy.
